The great strongman slew a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass (Judges 15:19). Overcome by thirst, he then drank from the rock at Lechi, a name that also means \"jawbone\" in Hebrew. Due to a mistaken translation in the Dutch Bible, some artists depicted Samson with a jawbone, rather than the rock, issuing water. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Salomon de Bray used a clear light, plain background, and a half-length composition, showing his awareness of the artistic conventions of the Utrecht \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 1507, event);\"\u003eCaravaggisti\u003c\/span\u003e. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e  \u003ci\u003eSamson with the Jawbone\u003c\/i\u003e shares the same size, medium, and composition with \u003ci\u003eDavid with His Sword;\u003c\/i\u003e they were probably intended as \u003cspan class=\"text-link\" onclick=\"javascript:link(26, 2373, event);\"\u003ependants\u003c\/span\u003e or companions in a series of Old Testament heroes.\u003cbr\u003e\n\r\n\r\u003cbr\u003e\u003cp class=\"\"\u003eOur Cards are all printed on 100% cotton tree-free archival paper.
